SEC 507: Advanced Theory and Practice in Secondary Education

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question about the course, start with this list. If you don't see your question here, email Dr. Gill.

When are assignments due?

You'll find every due date on the Canvas calendar, and the exact date for each assignment is in its Canvas details. You can preview what's coming on the module pages of this site, and the official deadlines are in Canvas.

Can I work ahead?

You can work ahead, because all the module pages are available from the first day of the course and you can move through them at your own pace. Submissions still close on their posted deadlines, so plan your weeks around those dates.

What if I need an extension?

Dr. Gill accepts late work when a documented emergency has kept you from meeting the deadline, and he doesn't accept it for other reasons. If you know you'll need an extension, email him before the deadline, and the sooner you write, the more options you'll have.

How do the video discussions work?

For each prompt, you'll record a short video response and then reply to at least two classmates. The details and rubrics are inside each module. Before you start recording, make sure your browser has microphone and camera permissions turned on.

What browser works best?

The interactive module pages work in current versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. If something looks off, try switching browsers before you troubleshoot further.

How do I check my grade?

The Canvas Grades tab shows your running total. Your letter grade comes from your percentage of the total points in the course, and you can find the letter for your percentage on the grade scale on the visual syllabus page.

Can I use AI tools on assignments?

Whether you can use AI tools depends on the assignment, so check each assignment's instructions before you start. When AI tools are permitted, you must disclose their use, and the work must be your own. The academic integrity policy applies to all submissions.

Where do I find definitions of the terms in the modules?

You can find definitions in two places. Inside any module, hover over or tap an underlined term, and its definition pops up. For a full alphabetical list, open the glossary, where you can filter the terms by typing or jump to a letter.

How do I reach Dr. Gill?

You can email Dr. Gill at gilld@uncw.edu with SEC 507 in the subject line, and he tries to reply within 24 hours on weekdays. For tech problems with Canvas, try the tech support page first.
